Software falls into four license categories:
- University site licenses (Category I),
- College of Science and Engineering site licenses (Category II),
- Departmental site licenses (Category III),
- Microlab licenses (Category IV).

Everyone at the U of MN is welcome to use the
above software. Click on the name of the software for further
information. The above software may require a U of MN X.500
username and password to download it. The software may also
require a U of MN IP address (to comply with licensing agreements)
to function. If you attempt to use the software from an off-campus
computer, you'll need to install the U of MN VPN client
(recommended for broadband services like cable modems, DSL, etc.).
A complete list of all software that can be purchased/licensed through the U of MN can be found at the UTools website.
Faculty and staff can use the Microsoft Work-at-Home option to obtain a lost cost copy of Windows, Microsoft Office, etc. for a computer they personally own or lease. The software may only be used for work-related purposes and only during the term of the campus agreement. The Work-at-Home licenses to not apply to students, unless they also are an employee.

For faculty and students (not staff) to gain access to the
above ITICC/MSDNAA
software, several conditions must be met. Everyone who is taking a course in
the College of Science and Engineering at the U
of MN pays a fee that
provides funding for the IT public labs and the departmental computing labs.
After you have paid the fee, or bypassed it
with a waiver,
you can create an IT
Labs account. After you've created/activated your IT Labs
account, you must register it
with the E-Academy system. You will then be able to access
the MSDNAA software through the ELMS
E-Academy website (which also has a helpful FAQ web page).

Category IV:
Microlab licensed software is available
to individuals doing coursework in the Chemistry Department's
al Microcomputer Facility in 101D Smith Hall. This facility
is not to be used for research.
* Individuals who use the Microlab are expected to
adhere to the posted Official
Policy in the Microlab as set by the Computer Committee as
well as all software legal agreements. Consult a staff
T.A before adding/altering/removing any software on the computers
in the lab.
