Microcomputer Lab

Official Policy For the Chemistry Instructional Microcomputer Facility

  1. This facility is for Chemistry academic work only. This means that if you are working on materials as a T.A. for a course or are a student taking a Chemistry course, you are welcome here. If you are working on research other than Directed-Studies, you should be using your research group facilities. Non-chemistry related coursework should also be done in a different computing facility (contact your course Instructor to find out where).

  2. This lab is run entirely from funds gathered from upper-division students. If you are in an Organic Chemistry class or are in a 1xxx level class, your computing needs should be facilitated elsewhere. We apologize for the inconvenience.

  3. We will not be held responsible for the integrity of your data. Please maintain your own backups of your valued files elsewhere. Viruses are a problem in the lab no matter how vigilant we are, and all media storage solutions (floppies in particular) are vulnerable to errors.

  4. Any Chemistry academic work or Directed-Studies work may be printed without charge. Please do not abuse our free printing policy. Non-coursework printouts are subject to confiscation.

  5. Chemistry work takes priority over E-mail. If you are using E-mail, you may be asked to give up your computer to other students. E-mail is allowed for Chemistry students if there are no other students needing to use the computers.

  6. Do not attempt to service/alter the printers or computers (i.e. add paper, fix a paper jam, install software). The Chemistry Department has hired Teaching Assistants to facilitate the maintenance of the computer lab. Let them do their job. Do not put yourself in a position to be held accountable for possible damages to our facilities.

  7. Food and beverages are permitted in the computer lab IF you clean up after yourself.

* To further understand your responsibilities regarding the use of this computer lab, please read: IT Acceptable Use Policy.

We reserve the right to revoke privileges to users who demonstrate repetitive abuse of lab policies, facilities, or staff. If you have any questions, ask the Computer Lab Teaching Assistant on duty. If you have any suggestions, comments, or feedback on how we can improve the lab or its policies, please contact chmmicro.
