Facilities & Support Services

Accounting Office
Department of Chemistry Accounting Office, located in 141 Smith
Center for Metals in Biocatalysis
The Center for Metals in Biocatalysis has been formed to foster interactions among the various groups at the University of Minnesota who are interested in metal ions and their roles in biocatalysis.
Computer and Electronic Services
Responsible for the setup and maintainence of computers, electronic equipment and centralized servers within the Chemistry department.
Glass Technology Service
Fabrication and Repair of scientific glass and laboratory equipment for Industrial, Chemical, Medical and Research facilities.
Industrial Partnership for Research in Interfacial and Materials Engineering
I PRIME accommodates various levels of corporate participation, ranging from technical planning to hand-on collaborative research with university faculty and students. This cooperative venture provides an ideal environment for training the next generation of scientists and engineers while strengthening research in both the academic and industrial sectors.
Lecture Demo
The Lecture Demonstration Facility exists to provide instructors with the resources that will enable them to illustrate the chemical principles behind their lecture material and in so doing, hopefully, engender a greater understanding of those principles amongst their audience.
Machine Shop
Chemistry no longer operates a machine shop. For machine shop services contact the Physics Machine Shop at 612-624-7048.
Mass Spectrometry Lab
The Department of Chemistry Mass Spectrometry Facility maintains and operates the Department's high-performance mass spectrometers.
Materials Characterization Facility
The Characterization Facility ("CharFac") is a multi-user, shared instrumentation facility for materials research spanning from nanotechnology to biology and medicine. Our analytical capabilities include microscopy via electron beams, force probes and visible light; elemental and chemical imaging including depth profiling; elemental, chemical and mass spectroscopy; atomic and molecular structure analysis via X-ray, ion or electron scattering; nanomechanical and nanotribological probes; and other tools for surface and thin-film metrology.
Materials Research Science and Engineering Center
(MRSEC) Through a combination of NSF, University and industrial support, the U of M MRSEC supports research in microstructured polymers, artificial tissues, magnetic heterostructures, and porous materials. The Center has access to numerous resources at the University, including a state-of-the-art materials characterization facility.
Microcomputer Lab (CHEM)
located in 11 Appleby Hall
This computer lab is a service provided by the Department of Chemistry for use primarily by its graduate and undergraduate students.
Institute of Technology's (IT) Microtechnology Laboratories
The Microtechnology Laboratory (MTL), is an interdisciplinary facility that supports faculty and industrial research within the Institute of Technology to support education, research and industrial collaboration in microelectronics and other related research involving microfabrication.
NMR Lab
The NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) lab is a facility of the chemistry department; its principal job is to provide access to NMR equipment and techniques for departmental research.
Polymer Synthesis Facility Custom polymer synthesis on large scale for external sale.
Research Stockroom
We carry a full line of chemicals, general laboratory, office and cleaning supplies. Application for Stockroom purchasing card
Room Reservations
Click the link to reserve a conference room in Kolthoff or Smith Hall. This can also be used to to reserve an overhead, slide projector, or the Department Van.
Safety
The purpose of the Department of Chemistry Safety Manual is to provide guidelines and policies that will promote a safe and healthy work environment for all personnel and students within the department, for all visitors to the department, and for all other persons who have reason to be working in departmental laboratories
X-Ray Lab
The Department of Chemistry's X-ray facility operates two Bruker-AXS SMART platform diffractometers with sealed-tube 3-KW X-ray generators.
