Presenter Guidelines for the Seminar Program

Audience
The chemistry department sponsors, on average, one seminar per week that is spotlighted as the “departmental seminar” and is widely attended by graduate students, postdocs, and faculty spanning a broad range of disciplines. Speakers should expect a diverse audience that includes, in addition to experts in the field, a majority of chemists that are interested in the research area, but otherwise not yet familiar with it. Consequently, presentation of sufficient background, introductory material and orientation toward the broader significance of the research is quite welcome.

Format
Seminars begin casually with coffee and cookies 10 minutes prior to the scheduled time, and speakers are of course invited to partake. Talks are typically targeted to be 40-50 minutes of presentation, with ample time for the lively question/answer sessions that usually follow.

Media
The seminar room is equipped to handle overhead transparencies, 35 mm slides, and LCD projected presentations. Also available is a “visual presenter” that feeds into the LCD projector and allows, among other things, 3-D models to be displayed or simple demonstrations to be made.

Further information
If speakers have any further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact your host or Chrisity Haynes (e-mail: haynes@chem.umn.edu phone: 612 626-1096)
