Analytical Seminar Series:

Spectroscopic Tools for Process Analysis of Pharmaceutical Products

4:15 p.m., 331 Smith Hall

The pharmaceutical industry has historically been extremely inefficient in manufacturing products. Constrained by government regulation and buoyed by high profit margins, manufacturing efficiency often took a back seat to regulatory conservatism and releasing product to market faster. Recently the FDA and industry have begun partnering to bring a risk-based approach to manufacturing validation, a key component of which is on-line process understanding using Process Analytical Technology (PAT). Analytical spectroscopy plays a key role in many of these applications. This talk will give an overview of pharmaceutical unit operations and the tools that can be used to provide information at each step in the manufacturing process. Special emphasis will be placed on chemical imaging and the potential benefits of visualizing the complete distribution of components in solid dosage forms.
