Elephant's
Toothpaste
Introduction:
This reaction gets it's name from the ingredients. First, hydrogen
peroxides are big in the toothpaste industry right now. Second,
toothpaste can be though of as a soap because it cleans your
teeth. Lastly, most people don't realize that toothpaste actually
contains a mild abrasive similar to NaI.
Materials:
- 50mL of 30% H2O2
- A few squirts of any liquid dish
washing soap
- A few crystals of NaI
- 500mL Erlenmeyer flask
- Plastic garbage bags or other
surface covering
Procedure:
Mix the soap and H2O2 solutions in the Erlenmeyer flask.
Quickly add the NaI and stand back.
Helpful Hints:
- Cover whatever surface the flask is set
on with a disposable protective covering that radiates at
least 1.5 feet from the flask. The Iodine could stain the
surface the flask is set on if not protected.
- This reaction
is exothermic and the flask can get very warm.
