Make
Carbon Dioxide
Needed:
- A gallon jug
- A beach ball
- A cork stopper
- A medicine dropper
- Water
- Sugar
- Molasses
- Yeast
Experiment:
Mix a cup of sugar, two tablespoons of molasses, and
yeast in 3/4 jug of water. Attach the ball by placing the medicine
dropper through the stopper and into the opening in the ball
after squeezing out the air. Set in a warm place. Within several
days the ball should fill with carbon dioxide. A large balloon
can also be used to trap the carbon dioxide produced.
Explanation:
Yeast plants growing in the solution
change sugar to alcohol and carbon dioxide gas. The alcohol
dissolves in the water, and the gas fills the ball. Hold the
opening of the ball to the mouth or nose and "taste" some of the gas.
It may smell like molasses, but will definitely have a tingle
as from a soft drink. Carefully and slowly "pour" some
of the gas into a jar. Lower a candle into it and the flame
goes out. Carbon dioxide gas is more dense than air and displaces
the air when "poured" into the jar. Without oxygen
from the air, the candle cannot burn, so the flame is extinguished.
