A "Pop" Bottle

Needed:

  • A bottle with a cork
  • Water
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Tissue paper
  • A pan or sink to catch the overflow
Experiment:
Put water and vinegar into the bottle. Roll a little baking soda in tissue paper and drop the paper into the bottle. Immediately place the cork on the bottle. Wait and observe as the cork shoots off the top of the bottle!

Explanation:
When the vinegar (an acid) and the baking soda (a base) are mixed, they combine chemically to produce carbon dioxide gas. As the gas forms, the pressure builds until it pops the cork off the bottle. If you can not find a cork, try this without the cork; the water and bubbles will overflow. Do not use a screw-top bottle. Experiment with different amounts of water, vinegar, baking soda, and tissue. Notice how the rate of carbon dioxide gas production varies.
