Floating Egg

Needed:

  • Two glasses
  • Salt
  • Two eggs
Experiment 1:
Mix plenty of salt (about 10 heaping teaspoons) into half a glass of water. Fill the second glass half full of fresh water. Try floating an egg in each glass. You will find that the egg will float in the salt water because it is less dense than salt water. But the egg will sink in the fresh water because it is more dense than fresh water.

Experiment 2:
Fill one glass half full of fresh water and one half full of very salty water, as before. Then, very carefully, pour the fresh water into the salt water. Don't let the liquids mix. Gently lower the egg into the water. It should float on the salt water and look as if it is suspended in the middle of the glass.
