Starting dates depend on the particular type of position but are often flexible. To apply, send a resume with a cover statement that briefly describes your background and the type of research you are most interested in pursuing.Depending on your personal interests, studies in the Buhlmann group may involve application or fundamental aspects with emphasis on analytical, materials, environmental, physical, or organic chemistry. Available research topics will depend on the position you are applying for and the needs of our group at the time of your applications but typically include topics such as:
- Chemical modification of carbon nanotubes and their characterization (TEM, STM, ...).
- Preparation and characterization of self-assembled monolayers on gold surfaces (contact angles, scanning tunneling microscopy, infrared and NMR spectroscopy, ...).
- Imaging at the molecular level: scanning tunneling microscopy with chemically modified gold tips.
- Application of anion or heavy metal ion-selective sensors to real environmental samples.
- Development of highly selective polymeric membrane sensors for nano- and picomolar concentrations.
- Synthesis of redox-active or hydrogen-bonding complexing agents or their covalent attachments to polymers.
- Spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization of redox-active complexing agents and their complexes.
- Modeling the response of electrochemical sensors based on polymeric membranes incorporating complexing agents for the analyte.
- Impedance spectroscopy of polymeric membranes.
- Only for undergraduate students: Students who have a strong desire may perform a library project involving an extensive literature search, if the results of that project are of value to the group.
Check our homepage for more information about the research in our group. Note in your application the date you anticipate being available. Postdoc applicants please also provide a list of publications and presentations, the names and e-mail (or mail) addresses of your doctoral advisor and at least one other person acquainted with your scientific background who can be contacted for a reference.
