Degree Programs Offered:
Ph.D. and M.S. degree programs are offered. However,
as a research institution we primarily admit students to the PhD program.
How To Apply:
For both the Chemistry Department and the Graduate School
application, you will need to APPLY ONLINE.
The entire application process is two-tiered. You apply directly to
the Graduate School for consideration for admission. You apply directly
to the Chemistry Department for consideration for financial support.
We do not review any applications until both are completed.
Use these links for information on what to include in your applications.
Application Deadlines:
Applications for Fall Semester (early September)
support must be completed by January 5 in order to be considered for fellowship
support and February 1 for applications being considered for Teaching and
Research Assistantships. Applications received after February 1 will still
be reviewed but offers will only be made to exceptional applications since
most of our positions will be filled. We prefer not to admit for Spring
Semester (mid January) except under extenuating circumstances.
Program Requirements:
The minimum requirement for admission
is an undergraduate degree in chemistry or a related area. The TOEFL
test is required for all non-native speakers who have received their
undergraduate degree from a foreign institution. General and subject
GRE scores are required of all applicants.
Financial Support:
All full-time doctoral students in
good academic standing receive complete financial support in the form
of fellowships, teaching assistantships or research assistantships. This
support is available throughout a student’s
graduate career. Those with 25%-50% appointments receive a full tuition
waiver and a health insurance package for which you will be charged a
minimal fee.
Graduate Assistantship - The
stipend for students being offered an Assistantship from the department
will be about $22,500/yr for 12 months, based on Fall 2007 offers.
Graduate School Fellowship - Candidates
must be nominated by their graduate program's Director of Graduate
Studies (DGS) to this all-University competition. The purpose of the
Graduate School Fellowship (GSF) is to assist directly in the recruitment
of outstanding Ph.D. students by providing the incentive of a full-support
academic-year merit fellowship. Prospective students who will enter
the University of Minnesota Graduate School for the first time in the
upcoming academic year may be nominated. Nomination deadline is mid
January for the following academic year.
The stipend for GSF students (including additional support from the department)
will be about $30,600/year for 12 months based on Fall 2007 offers.
Department Fellowships - We award,
to a select number of students, support in addition to the assistantship.
Other Fellowship Opportunities - Fellowship opportunities are available for
students who are in their first year of graduate studies and are citizens or
permanent residents of the United States.
The National Science Foundation - http://www.ehr.nsf.gov/dge/
The Graduate School has put together an excellent list of other
funding opportunities.
We augment the fellowship stipends of students who hold a fellowship
from most sources outside the University. The amount of the augmentation
varies and should be discussed with the Director of Graduate Studies
as soon as you know about the fellowship award.
Benefits
- Tuition, health and
dental insurance are provided to students admitted with financial
support from the department. Support continues as long as satisfactory
progress is maintained. Also, eligible
students may elect to purchase
dependent health and dental care.
Results of Application Review:
We strive to respond as
quickly as possible after your application file has become complete.
Once your application is completed and has been
reviewed, you will receive a letter from the Chemistry Department if
the review has been positive. If the department decides they need more
information, you will be notified by email. If the department decides
not to admit you, you will be notified by the Graduate School.
Accepting/Declining of Offer of Admissions:
We ask that
you notify us in writing as soon as you make your decision to attend
or not attend our program. You may do so by submitting this form.
You also need to reply to the Graduate School. Their
form is online and can be accessed from your Graduate School admissions
letter (link to the Enrollment Form.)
