New graduate students may choose a research advisor any time during the
first semester in residence and must choose their advisor no later than January

individually with faculty members and collect 4 signatures on the graduate
Research Advisor Selection Form before they can join a research group.
Review of the student’s progress:
Each semester the Graduate Committee reviews the progress of first-year
graduate students. At the end of the first year students must meet all of
the following requirements to remain in good standing in the Ph.D. program:
(i) a GPA of 3.0 or better
(ii) completion of at least 20 credits of coursework with a grade of B- or
better
(iii) passing grades on all four proficiency exams

Degree Program Form Preliminary Oral Examination Prospective Committee Request
Form:
The Degree Program
Form and Preliminary
Oral Examination Prospective Committee Request form or the M.S.
Oral Examination Prospective Committee Request Form must be submitted no later than October 1st. Completed forms must be turned
in to the Chemistry Department in 115 Smith Hall. These forms are available
on-line and in the Chemistry Graduate Operations Office in 137 Smith Hall.
Written preliminary examination: Typically,
the written preliminary exam is completed in the Fall semester of the second
year. The written preliminary examination is required by the Graduate School,
but it takes a variety of forms in the case of individual students. The
precise requirement is determined by the student’s choice of specialty area or by an approved interdisciplinary
program worked out in conjunction with a Three–Member Advising Committee
and approved by the Director of Graduate Studies. See the specialty area
guidelines listed below for further details. After completion of your written
preliminary examination, have the Preliminary
Written Exam Report signed
and turned in to 115 Smith.
Oral preliminary examination: Typically,
the perliminary oral exam is completed within the Spring semester of the
second year. Each Ph.D. candidate must pass the oral preliminary examination.
Possible outcomes of the first examination are i) pass, ii) fail with option
to retake (one time only) the examination, or iii) fail. Students
who have not taken their oral preliminary examination eleven weeks before
the end of Spring/Summer intercession of their second year (March 24, 2006)
or who have not passed this examination by the beginning of Summer Term of
their second year will no longer be in good standing in the Ph.D. Program. They
will be reclassified into the M.S. program and will be reconsidered for
the Ph.D. program only under extraordinary circumstances. It should be
noted that there is a Graduate School requirement that ten calendar weeks
must pass before a retake of the preliminary oral examination may be scheduled.
See the specialty area guidelines listed below for further details.
