GLRM 2002 Women Chemists Luncheon
Celebrating 75 Years of the Women Chemists Committee Panel Discussion: WISE* Words from Successful Women in Chemistry *Women in Science and Engineering Sunday, June 2 12 - 2 pm Sold out! Organizers: University of Minnesota Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Team (Contact Letitia Yao, yao@chemsun.chem.umn.edu) Sponsored in part by the University of St. Thomas, Hamline University and Macalester College. Additional funding provided by the University of Minnesota Community Initiative in partnership with Coca-Cola. Panelists: Laura Kiessling received her B.S. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983. Six years later, she obtained her Ph.D. from Yale University. In 1991 she joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin in the Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Her research focuses on elucidating and exploiting the mechanisms of cell surface recognition processes, especially those that involve protein-saccharide recognition and oligosaccharide function. She has used organic polymer chemistry to create synthetic ligands that can be used to alter the display of proteins on the cell surface, to modulate signal transduction, and to illuminate the features important in biomolecular recognition. Her studies have implications for controlling the inflammatory and immune responses. Kiessling's honors and awards include the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award from the American Chemical Society, and a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. Ann M. Mueting is a founding member of the firm Mueting, Raasch & Gebhardt, practicing patent law in the chemical and biotechnology arts. She received her B.S. and M.S. degree from Creighton University and her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. After a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Minnesota, she joined the firm of Merchant & Gould where she served as a patent agent and remained as an associate after attending law school (J.D., University of Minnesota). In 1994, Ann joined the firm of Schwegman, Lundberg, Woessner & Kluth in Minneapolis, and in 1995 formed the firm Mueting, Raasch & Gebhardt with two other attorneys. Ann is very active in various professional organizations and is also on the Board of Directors of the American Intellectual Property Law Association. Judy Benham received her B.A. in chemistry from the University of Rochester. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1978. She has been at 3M for the past 25 years where she has risen through the ranks, holding several positions starting from senior research chemist to becoming the technical director of packaging systems in 1992. She is currently the business director for radio frequency identification.
