The 3rd Annual North Central Region
Natural Organic Matter Symposium

March 8 and 9, 2002
University of Minnesota
St. Paul, Minnesota

This symposium will bring together scientists in the region who are involved in Natural Organic Matter (NOM) in soil and water research to share research results and to discuss the possibilities for collaboration in graduate education and research. We will focus on NOM in soils and waters. This includes, but is not limited to:

¨ Structure of Humic Materials
¨ Interactions of NOM with Xenobiotic Organic Compounds
¨ Interactions of NOM with Metals and Clays
¨ The Role of NOM in Global Carbon Cycle
¨ The Role of NOM in Stimulating Plant Growth.
¨ The Role of NOM in Water Treatment

The symposium will include oral presentations as well as a poster session. Posters and oral presentations by graduate students are encouraged. We will publish the abstracts of all of the presentations, which will be distributed at the workshop.

Keynote Speaker:
Diane McKnight
, Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering and a fellow of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, the University of Colorado.
"Humic Substances and Electron Transport Reactions in Aquatic Ecosystems: The Role of Quinone Moieties".

Session Lead-off Speakers:
Klaus Schmidt-Rohr
, Department of Chemistry, Iowa State University
"Structural Studies of NOM by Solid State NMR"

James B. Cotner, Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior, University of Minnesota
"Dissolved NOM in Global Carbon Cycling".

Lunch on Friday and Saturday, and dinner on Friday, will be provided to maximize the interaction among the scientists attending the workshop.

Fees: Registration is free. A nominal fee will be charged for two lunches and a dinner.
