The CSP will implement, facilitate and foster a wide range of educational, participation broadening, and public outreach activities. The CSP will work diligently to broaden the participation of underrepresented minority students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields by building partnerships with the Office for Diversity Outreach (ODO) at UMN and the North Star STEM Alliance (within a Louise Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation program funded by the NSF). An important aspect of the Center’s mission will be public outreach aimed at educating citizenry and policy makers on the societal importance of sustainable technologies. The CSP will integrate a public policy initiative that nurtures relationships between the CSP, government, and industry by working with the Center for Science, Technology, and Public Policy at the UMN Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs (CSTPP). Broad public dissemination of CSP activities are also planned.
If you have ideas for outreach programs or public policy contact the CSP Outreach Coordinator, Laura Seifert (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Energy and U Show: starting with the simple idea of getting elementary through high school students excited about science and engineering and sustainability concepts, the Energy and U Show has developed into a semi-annual event bringing almost 10,000 students to the University of Minnesota campus. Members of the development team include CSP's Marc Hillmyer, Theresa Reineke, and Frank Bates, with activities also sponsored by CSP.
Eco-Experience: Come visit the CSP at the Minnesota State Fair! For the last two years CSP researchers have taken residence in the Eco-Experience Building at the Minnesota State Fair in order to interact with and educate the general public on the importance of advancing the University's research in sustainable polymers. Nearly 300,000 people visited the Eco-Experience building in 2011, and we will see you there again in 2012!
Summer Undergrad Research Fellows: Five summer undergraduate researchers will work with CSP Principal Investigators during summer 2012 on a variety of key research projects. Applicants are recruited in partnership with the NorthStar STEM Alliance.
Teacher Workshop: On June 29, 2012 the CSP held a workshop for secondary school teachers to introduce them to a lab experiment where students will convert starch into plastics of varying properties. This half-day workshop introduced the lab and allowed teachers the opportunity to discuss the appropriate state standards and curriculum sequencing for such activities. The lab worksheet for teachers is available here.
Center for Science, Technology, and Public Policy: The Center for Science, Technology, and Public Policy fosters understanding of the role of science and technology in society, particularly relationships to economic growth, health, the environment, education, and national security. The center examines the effects of science and technology on society and on the political and economic relationships among nations. The center's mission is to improve people’s lives by advancing the application of science and technology to solve public problems.
Chemistry Department Outreach Program: Chemistry demonstrations and chemistry career discussions in local elementary, junior high, and senior high school classes. Also participate in events at the Science Museum of Minnesota and The Works, local PTA meetings, the State Fair, and Chemistry Day at the University.
CSE Office of Diversity and Outreach: The Institute of Technology's Office of Diversity and Outreach promotes academic excellence and supports underrepresented students and women earning bachelor's degrees in engineering, physical sciences, and mathematics.
Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs: The Institute is widely recognized for its role in examining public issues and shaping public policy at the local, state, national, and international levels, and for providing leadership and management expertise to public and nonprofit organizations.
