Other Things You'll See
At Chem Day 2001

Chemistry Outreach Program

Undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Minnesota have been visiting schools demonstrating and discussing chemistry for a number of years. Their demonstrations are very visual and focus on chemical transformations such as polymer synthesis, exothermic and endothermic reactions, chemical reactions which produce light or electricity, and catalysis. Vist the 210 Smith Hall teaching lab and see the many fasinating demonstrations and ask these students questions about chemistry careers.

The World Of Chemistry Videos

Nature's chemical world has an ingenious and beautiful architecture. Journey through this exciting world with Nobel laureate Roald Hoffmann as your guide. The foundations of chemical structures and their behavior are explored in theory, illustrated with computer animation, and in practice, with fascinating demonstrations and on-site footage at working industrial and research laboratories. Distinguished scientists help magnify the minute chemical building blocks of all matter, and discuss yesterday's breakthroughs and today's challenges.

Back By Popular Demand:
Chemistry Bingo

How well do you know the elements of the periodic table? Test your knowledge:
3 This gas was discovered in 1774 by Priestley & Scheele
3 It's name means acid forming
3 3rd most abundant element in the sun
3 Makes up about a half of everything on earth
3 21% of the atmosphere by volume
3 2/3rds of the human body
If you knew that this was OXYGEN you'd look for the symbol on your card. Get five elements in a row and win a prize. Chem Bingo will take place in Smith 231 from 1:00 to 2:30.

Tour of Facilities
"The Day In The Life Of A Molecule"

Ever wonder how chemists determine what's in their test tube? Take a 40 minute tour of the University of Minnesota's Department of Chemistry facilities. See how a compound is synthesized and purified. Follow the molecule on to the analytical labs where Mass Spectrometers are used to determine its mass and ion properties; X-Ray Crystallography is used to determine its molecules structure; and on to the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Lab to see all that a proton NMR spectrum can explain about a compound. You will get copies of the actual spectra. These guided tours start at 12:30 from the Smith Hall lobby and at 15 minute intervals thereafter until 3:00. Pick up tour tickets at the reception desk on Chem Day.
