Chemistry Day
November 3, 2001

We would like to invite you to participate in the eighth Chemistry Day to be held on Saturday, November 3, 2001, in the Chemistry Department at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. This event is a part of National Chemistry Week with events running from 10:30AM to 3:30PM. The morning will feature the Ninth Larry Conroy Memorial Lecture presented by the world famous chemical showmen Marv Lang, Don Showalter, and Gary Shulfer from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Their show, "Yes Virginia, Learning Chemistry Can Be Fun" is a fast paced series of demonstrations on chemical and physical phenomena presented to general audiences, designed to stimulate student interest in science by involving students in the demonstration process. Each demonstration is a learning experience that will send students back to the classroom talking about science. The morning show and luncheon, intended for high school students and teachers, will require advanced ticket purchase at a cost of $2. The morning program will be held at Northrop Auditorium to accomodate all who want to see the show. The last time this event was help we sold over 800 tickets. The luncheon this year will be box lunches in Smith Hall due to the construction on campus. The afternoon events are open to the public and include tours of the department's state-of-the-art research facilities, interesting exhibits and demonstrations by local colleges and companies, Chemistry Bingo, and videos. The highlight of the afternoon will be a Classroom/Laboratory Demonstration Exhibition by high school students. This year we are asking those schools that wish to participate in the Classroom/Laboratory Demonstration Exhibition to work as a "school team" (one demo per classroom). The demonstration should illustrate a chemical principle or concept and be suitable as an aid in the teaching of high school chemistry. All students participating in the Classroom/Laboratory Demonstration Exhibition will receive complementary tickets to the morning talk and luncheon as well as a special Chem Day T-shirt. Detailed information on location and parking will be distributed with the tickets. The afternoon chemistry show and exposition will take place in Smith Hall on the Minneapolis campus (Pleasant St. and Washington Ave., SE). This show will provide an exciting look at chemical research in action and the fantastic opportunities for its future.

Sincerely,
Louis H. Pignolet
Professor and Director of Chem Day
