CHEMISTRY
WISE (Women in Science & Engineering)
Increasing Retention and Improving the Climate for Women in Chemistry
Since 1989, the University of Minnesota Department of Chemistry has sponsored workshops designed to increase retention of women in this department. In 1995, the Chemistry Department WISE Team, composed of faculty, staff and students, has taken over this program. Most of the activities target graduate students at various stages. Two workshops on job hunting focused on resources for finding position, resume and Curriculum Vitae writing, and interviewing, and delineated differences in academic versus industrial job searches. Non-traditional careers in Chemistry at either the M.S. or Ph. D. level were the focus of a panel discussion. Workshops on dealing with motivational slumps and goal development and assessment were held to assist student in setting long-and shot-term goals and maintaining perspective in graduate school. The particular challenges of first- and second-year students were addressed in workshops on Choosing an Advisor, study skills, dealing with procrastination, and preparing for oral prelim exams. We have established a lunch seminar series for women in which graduate students present their research to undergraduates, as well as a special departmental seminar featuring a prominent woman chemist. Workshops and other events have been well-attended and well-received by participants. The Chemistry WISE Team events have been funded by grants received from the Office for University Women and the Department of Chemistry, at $100-$2000 per year.

Industrial Recruiting Brings Alumni Back To Department
Ah, fall! Along with a fresh crispness in the air, there is a special feeling about fall on a university campus. Perhaps it harks back to our own youth and starting the new school year, or maybe it is just a prevailing enthusiasm marking new beginnings. Students are returning from their various summer pursuits, ready to begin a new year. Faculty and staff are rededicating themselves to meet the challenges of another academic year. Here in Chemistry, we are always excited about fall for yet another reason: it brings our graduate alumni back to speak with advanced degree candidates about placement in industrial positions. Chemistry is the only department within the Institute of Technology to offer on-campus interviews to its advanced degree candidates, as a supplement to the services offered by the IT Career Services Office. Industrial recruiters who wish to speak only with Ph.D. and Master's level chemists work directly with Chemistry chair's secretary Kathy Ross to set schedules of interviews with interested candidates. We are very fortunate to have several loyal alumni who are interested in increasing the Minnesota contingent at their respective companies. Depending upon their corporate recruiting structure, some of them come every year and speak with every student who wishes to see them, while others will visit only when they have specific needs and will screen resumes to pre-select those that are a good match with their available openings. Most of them will take advantage of the opportunity to renew ties with their faculty mentors or to find out about cutting edge research taking place in labs throughout Smith and Kolthoff Halls, and some of them will time their visit to participate in the departmental seminar program by giving a public lecture. Some of our alums who have returned in recent years as industrial recruiters are:
